The Origins in Earth and Ancestor Worship
The roots of the Zhongyuan Festival trace back to ancient agricultural and ancestral veneration rituals. With the rise and flourishing of Daoism, the divine triad of the Three Officials—governing Heaven, Earth, and Water—was established. Among them, the sacred birthday of the Earth Official falls precisely on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, known as the Zhongyuan Festival. His supreme duty is to grant pardons and forgive the transgressions of departed souls.
A Day of Remembrance and Guidance
Falling on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month and colloquially known as the "Middle of the Seventh Month," this festival carries the legend that all souls are released from the underworld. Across the land, families gather to perform solemn rites for their ancestors, welcoming departed kin home for a spiritual reunion. Because of this, it is widely referred to as the Ghost Festival. Folk custom calls for establishing altars and offering food to nourish wandering and forsaken spirits. People visit ancestral graves, perform memorial ceremonies, and light lotus-shaped river lanterns to illuminate the path home for returning souls. Simultaneously, Daoist temples hold grand liturgical rituals across all ten directions to deliver and liberate these spirits.
Universal Deliverance and Compassion
The Zhongyuan liturgical rituals are performed to pardon the sins of departed souls and alleviate their karmic burdens, guiding them toward peaceful rest. During these sacred ceremonies, Daoist priests not only deliver the spirits of individual family lineages, but also extend profound spiritual relief to unclaimed wandering souls and those fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives in battle for their country. Devoted seekers at home may also float a river lantern and offer a stick of pure incense, coming together during this sacred time to pray for eternal peace for the departed and abundant blessings for the living.
