The Ancient Connection Between the Chinese Zodiac(shengxiao) and the Big Dipper
1. What Is a Birth Star?
In ancient China, people observed the stars to navigate, track the seasons, and understand the passage of time.
Among them, the Big Dipper held a particularly important place.
In Taoist tradition, its seven stars are associated with celestial deities believed to govern life, longevity, and destiny.
An ancient Taoist scripture, the Beidou Jing (Scripture of the Northern Dipper), teaches that each person's life and physical being fall under the care of a corresponding Birth Star Deity.
For generations, devotees have honored these deities through prayers and rituals, seeking blessings for health, peace, and long life.
So, how can you find your own Birth Star?
The answer lies in the Chinese Zodiac(shengxiao).
2. The Chinese Zodiac(shengxiao) and Your Birth Star
You may already know the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac, from the Rat to the Pig.
But did you know that each zodiac animal is also connected to one of the Seven Star Deities of the Big Dipper?
According to the Beidou Jing, the twelve zodiac animals correspond to seven celestial deities:
Tanlang, Jumen, Lucun, Wenqu, Lianzhen, Wuqu, and Pojun.
Some deities are associated with one zodiac animal, while others are connected to two.
Now, take another look at your birth date.

The Beidou Jing describes practices such as reciting scriptures, making offerings, and praying to the Star Deities for protection and longevity.
One important practice is Lidou (礼斗), a Taoist ritual honoring the Big Dipper.
Through these traditions, devotees express gratitude, seek blessings, and reflect on their connection with the heavens.

Every year, from the first to the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, Taoist communities celebrate the Nine Emperor Gods Festival.
