The Shangyuan Festival: The Heavenly Official Bestows Blessings & Celebrating the Birthday of the Ancestral Celestial Master

In Taoism, there is a long-standing tradition: "The Heavenly Official of Shangyuan bestows blessings, the Earth Official of Zhongyuan forgives sins, and the Water Official of Xiayuan relieves misfortunes." The Great Emperor of the Heavenly Official resides in the Jade Purity Realm. Formed by the convergence of the green, yellow, and white Qi, he descends to the mortal realm every year on the 15th day of the first lunar month to inspect the sins and merits of humanity. Thus, this day is celebrated as "The Heavenly Official Bestows Blessings."

What makes this day even more auspicious is that the 15th day of the first lunar month is also the birthday of the Ancestral Celestial Master.

The Ancestral Celestial Master, Zhang Ling (courtesy name Fuhan, respectfully known as Daoling), was from Fengyi, Peiguo during the Eastern Han Dynasty. The Yuan Dynasty text, Comprehensive Mirror of the Successive Generations of True Immortals Embodying the Tao, records: "The Ancestral Celestial Master was born on Tianmu Mountain in the Wu region, on the 15th day (the full moon) of the first lunar month in the tenth year of Jianwu of the Eastern Han Dynasty."

On the occasion of his sacred birthday, devotees are encouraged to practice fasting, burn incense, and chant the Precious Invocation of the Ancestral Celestial Master to accumulate boundless merit.

With sincere hearts, we take refuge and pay homage. Originally from the Southern lands, tracing his journey to the capital of Shu. First obtaining the Alchemical Texts of the Nine Tripod Cauldrons of the Yellow Emperor, Later attending upon Lord Lao twice at the Jade Altar. From a thousand scrolls, he grasped the essence of cultivating Immortality, In due time, mastering the arts of the vital breath. Perfecting all magical registers, receiving the Covenant of Awesome Might, and forming the luminous seals. Distinguishing between the orthodox and the heterodox, claiming the Blessed Courtyards to govern, and transforming the salty springs. His virtue fulfilled through the Great Elixir, his Tao aligning with the Seven Luminaries. Great Compassion and Great Vow, Great Sage and Great Mercy. Upholding the Teachings of the Three Heavens, Assisting the Profound and Embodying the Tao. The Great Master of the Law, governing the Department of Thunder. The Supreme Minister of the Great Mystery, the Great Lord of Law over all Heavens. The Zhengyi True Lord of Profound Transformation, Serene Response, and Manifest Protection. The Infinite and Brilliant Great Emperor of the Six Directions, The Heavenly Worthy Who Subdues Demons and Protects the Tao!

上元佳節天官賜福，恭賀祖天師聖誕

道教一直有“上元天官賜福、中元地官赦罪、下元水官解厄”的說法，天官大帝隸屬玉清境。由青黃白三氣結成，每逢正月十五日，即下人間，校定人之罪福，故稱“天官賜福”。

同時更為殊勝的是正月十五日，還是祖天師聖誕。祖天師張陵，字輔漢，諱道陵。為東漢沛國豐邑人（今江蘇徐州），元代《曆世真仙體道通鑒》中載：“祖天師於東漢建武十年甲午正月望日生於吳地天目山。”

恭賀祖天師聖誕之際，眾善信可以齋戒焚香並持誦《祖天師寶誥》，獲福無量。

志心皈命禮。本來南土，上溯蜀都。先獲黃帝九鼎之丹書，後侍老君兩度於玉局。千軸得修真之要，一時成吐納之功。法箓全成，受盟威品而結璘訣。正邪兩辨，奪福庭治而化鹹泉。德就大丹，道齊七政。大悲大願，大聖大慈。三天扶教，輔玄體道。大法天師，雷霆都省。泰玄上相，都天大法主。正一沖玄神化靜應顯佑真君。六合無窮高明大帝，降魔護道天尊。
