The Origin of Mount Laojun
March 6,2026
Legend has it that during the Spring and Autumn Period, the Supreme Ancestor Lao Tzu rode a green ox westward toward the Hangu Pass. The pass commander, Yin Xi, witnessed an auspicious purple aura gathering in the east and knew a great sage was approaching, so he ventured out to welcome him.
After composing the five-thousand-word Tao Te Ching at Hangu Pass, Lao Tzu continued his journey west to Jingshi Mountain in Luoyang—the place we now know as Mount Laojun—where he lived in seclusion to cultivate the Tao.
The mountain earned the name "Mount Laojun" because Lao Tzu is revered in Taoism as Tai Shang Lao Jun (The Supreme Venerable Sovereign). The official imperial decree renaming the mountain was issued during the Tang Dynasty.
The Laojun Temple at its summit was originally constructed during the Northern Wei Dynasty. Later, during the reign of Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty, the legendary minister Yuchi Jingde oversaw its grand renovation. Built at the very pinnacle of the mountain with iron rafters and iron tiles, the temple became renowned far and wide as the "Iron Peak" (Tie Ding).
Taoist architecture places a profound emphasis on harmony with the environment. Mount Laojun possesses a breathtaking, majestic presence, featuring unique tectonic peak forests and spectacular stone landscapes that deeply move the soul.
The layout of the Laojun Temple follows the natural contours of the mountain. By refusing to alter or destroy the original terrain, the architecture perfectly embodies the core philosophy that "The Tao follows Nature" (Dao Fa Zi Ran).
LonghuTao has chosen Mount Laojun as our sacred site for invoking blessings. We hope that through the spiritual empowerment of this holy Taoist mountain, we can wash away worldly dust and welcome pure, auspicious fortune into the lives of all who walk this path with us.
