Return to the Uncarved Block
March 9,2026
In the Tao Te Ching, the Supreme Ancestor Lao Tzu issues a profound warning: "The five colors blind the eye; the five tones deafen the ear." This reveals the danger of overindulging in sensory stimulation and external materialism. Rather than nourishing the soul, these distractions obscure our true perception and disrupt our inner peace.
Therefore, Taoism presents the cultivation path of "Fan Pu Gui Zhen" (Returning to the Uncarved Block and Original Purity). It is a journey from complexity to simplicity—actively stripping away acquired artificiality, reconnecting with the source of life, and returning to a state of inner purity and nature.
The Wisdom of the Infant Lao Tzu uses the infant as the symbol of the ideal spiritual state. The preciousness of an infant lies in its absolute innocence, entirely untainted by the mundane world. It retains an abundance of Primordial Qi (innate vitality). As the text notes: though its bones are weak and its sinews soft, its grasp is firm. Its actions are entirely natural, completely free from contrivance or pretense.
Cleansing the Mind and Spirit True cultivation and spiritual elevation lie in cleansing away the artificial habits and excessive desires that have attached themselves to us as we grow.
This requires us to deeply examine every aspect of our lives: we must actively simplify inflated material desires and clear away complex, redundant information. Let our words return to their sincere essence, and let our actions manifest the quiet, profound power of simplicity.
