The Origins of the Supreme Emperor of the Dark Heaven

On the third day of the third lunar month, the sacred birthday of the Great Emperor Zhenwu, we can face the North and recite his precious incantation, praying for profound blessings and peace for our families and the world. The Great Emperor Zhenwu, also known as the Supreme Emperor of the Dark Heaven (Xuantian Shangdi), is a highly illustrious deity of the Jade Capital in Taoism. Faith in him originated from the ancient astrological worship of the Northern Seven Mansions of the Black Tortoise (Xuanwu). The ancients divided the celestial phenomena into Four Divine Spirits: the Azure Dragon of the East, the White Tiger of the West, the Vermilion Bird of the South, and the Black Tortoise of the North. Among them, the Black Tortoise is symbolized by the mystical union of a turtle and a snake, perfectly representing the Northern realm and the profound virtue of Water.

A Millennium of Incense and Devotion

The Great Emperor Zhenwu cultivated his spirituality from a young age and ultimately ascended to immortality at the sacred Mount Wudang. He was decreed by the Jade Emperor as the "Heaven-Suppressing True Martial Spiritually Responsive and Protecting Holy Emperor," governing the entire northern realm. During the Ming Dynasty, faith in Zhenwu reached its absolute zenith when Emperor Zhu Di invoked the deity's divine manifestation to launch his military campaigns. The incense of this profound devotion has burned uninterrupted for a millennium, continuing to flourish beautifully to this very day.
