The Wisdom of Guarding Stillness

The complexities of the world constantly create ripples in the mind, giving rise to endless worries. The Supreme Ancestor Lao Tzu said in the Tao Te Ching: "Attain the ultimate emptiness; hold firmly to the truest stillness." Taoist wisdom reveals that the practice of "Guarding Stillness" (Shou Jing) is the ultimate key to dissolving sorrow.

The Mind as a Deep Pool What does it mean to guard stillness? It means allowing your heart to be like a profound, deep pool of water, completely undisturbed by the superficial turbulence of the outside world. When a clear breeze blows across the surface, ripples naturally form—but they will soon fade away on their own. The depths of the pool remain forever calm.

If someone slanders you, oppresses you, or belittles you, there is no need to argue or harbor resentment. These negative encounters are merely ripples upon the surface. They will inevitably dissipate and can never fundamentally harm the deep waters of your true self. To allow ourselves to be consumed by anxiety over these fleeting ripples is simply an unnecessary drain on our own energy.

The Power of Simplicity Taoism pursues the truth that "The Great Tao is Ultimate Simplicity." Its core is about stripping away external interference to continuously seek what is authentic.

The essence of guarding stillness is not a lifeless, dead silence, but the profound tranquility that remains after the turbulence has passed. This stillness is true spiritual cultivation—it is unwavering focus and boundless vitality.

May you find this genuine tranquility and quiet strength within our complex world.
