The Art of Life: Knowing the White, Guarding the Black
December 25,2025
In the Tao Te Ching of the Supreme Patriarch Laozi, it is written: "Know the white, but keep the black." This is not a hollow slogan, but a profound spiritual cultivation.
It is much like a traditional Chinese painting: the inked black represents tangible form and substance, while the carefully preserved white space embodies the ethereal spirit and rhythm. Only when black and white generate one another, and void and substance complement each other, can a majestic atmosphere be created.
"Knowing the White" means looking beyond the worldly judgments of right and wrong, success and failure, keeping the heart as bright and clear as a hanging mirror.
"Guarding the Black" means that despite possessing soaring ambitions, one remains content to hold onto humility. This is not cowardice, but a deep understanding of the laws governing the universe. Those who display excessive sharpness are like birds with broken wings, easily ravaged by wind and rain. Only those who understand how to "conceal their brilliance and blend with the dust" can travel steadily and far.
True strength never floats upon the surface. It resembles the roots of a tree, anchored deep in the darkness, silently drawing nutrients from the earth. The deeper the silence, the more vigorous the life force. Only by guarding the "Black" can one endow the "White" with soul and profound meaning.
The dialectical essence of "Knowing the White and Guarding the Black" is the far-reaching wisdom of preserving one's True Self and accumulating energy within a complex world.
